Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol (1724-1779) (after Thomas Gainsborough), attributed to Richard Cosway RA (Tiverton, Devon 1742 - London 1821). 1775. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing to the left, wearing naval uniform of bright blue coat edged with gold, white facings, white waistcoat with large gold buttons, black hat edged with gold. Blue eyes, light gret hair. Pale grey background. Engraved on back of gold case 'Augustus John, Earl of Bristol, Admiral in the Royal Navy, 1775', and inscribed later in ink 'by Cosway'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
