Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Elizabeth Bennet, Lady Carr (d.1696) by Peter Cross (c.1645 - London 1724). 1674. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young woman, facing, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white dress, blue cloak, pearl necklace and ear-drops. Brown eyes, dark hair. Blue-grey background. Signed at right in gold 'PC 74'. Engraved on back of gold case 'Lady Carr, Mother to the Earl of Bishop's 1st wife, by Cross'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably commissioned by the 1st Earl of Bristol.
