Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, Sir Robert Carr, 3rd Bt. (1637-1682), by John Hoskins the younger (1620/30 - after 1692). 1654. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing black armour and a grey shirt. Grey eyes, light brown hair, fresh complexion. Sky to right, plain brown background to left. Signed and dated to left in black paint '1654 IH' and engraved on back of gold case 'Sir Robert Carr Father to the 1st wife of the Earl of Bristol, by Cowper'. The style and initials clearly identifying the artist as Hoskins and not Cooper as stated on the back of the case. The Elder Hoskins by 1654 had either retired or was employing studio assistants, among them probably his son, also John Hoskins, who is the likely painter of this miniature.
