Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Lady Elizabeth Foster (1759-1824) as Sappho, British (English) School or Italian School, circa 1785/95. Half-length, oval portait of a young woman, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, holding a lyre, wearing a white dress. Fair curls tied with blue ribbon, blue eyes.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Sir Walter Farquhar sale, Christie's 1.6.1894, lot 110, bought for Ickworth.
