Oil painting on canvas, Lady Sophia Elizabeth Caroline Hervey, Lady Sophia Windham (1811-1863), British (English) School, circa 1835/40. Full-length portrait, riding side-saddle on a chestnut hunter. Long hair in ringlets under top hat and veil. Dark grey or black riding habit, white gloves. Flat landscape with blue and grey sky.
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by the sitter or her husband, and given to her parents; thence by descent to the 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951); on the death of the 4th Marquess, valued for probate; accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of tax and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
