Summary
Pastel on paper or vellum, Mary Lepel, Lady Hervey (1706-1768) (after Sir Godfrey Kneller) by George Knapton (London 1698 – Kensington 1778). 1756. Half-length portrait of a young woman, head turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue-striped bodice and lace collar falling over the shoulders; a matching blue stole draped over her right arm and around back; small blue ribbon flower on right hand corner of bodice; short powdered curly hair with blue ribbon; blue-grey background. Inscribed 'Mary, only daughter of Brig. Gen. Lepel, Maid of Honour to Caroline, Princess of Wales. Wife of John, Lord Hervey, Baron of Ickworth'.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
