Summary
Pastel, fixed with glue, strengthened with oils, on paper laid down on canvas, Anne-Louise-Madeleine-Élénore de Montmorency, Duchess de Rohan-Chabot (1771-1828), after Baron François Gérard (Rome 1770 – Paris 1837). circa 1798/1820. A head-and-shoulders portrait of a young woman, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, against very dark, indistinct classical landscape. Short, curly brown hair showing beneath turban of gold material with narrow ribbon decoration. Short-sleeved red Empire-style dress, with off-white stole or mantle edged with multi-coloured flowered ribbon, around shoulders. Single strand of pearls. Small round brooch pinned on left shoulder.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
