Chalk on paper, Lady Mary Caroline Hervey, Countess of Erne (1753-1842) and her daughter Elizabeth Caroline Mary Crichton, later Lady Wharncliffe (1779-1856) by John Downman, RA (Ruabon, North Wales, 1750 – Wrexham 1824). 1781. Oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, in profile to left, in a blue dress, the child standing in front, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
