Summary
Watercolour on paper, Lord John Augustus Hervey (1757-1796) by Alexander Day (Somerset 1773 – London 1841). 1795. Full-length portrait of a man leaning with his right elbow against stone fountain, water coming from lion's mouth. Short, wispy brown hair. White cravat and waistcoat from the pocket of which hangs a red ribbon with fob watch (?) Tight buckskin trousers. Long overcoat of blue-green with gilt buttons. Holds a white handkerchief or similar in left hand. His head rests on his right hand. Large brimmed top hat lies on top of fountain. Immediate background of trees - some pale brown leaves amidst general blue-green tones. Hazy distant landscape with hills on right.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
