Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of Amalfi from the Gulf of Salerno by Franz Ludwig Catel (Berlin 1778 - Rome 1856), 1820; previously attributed to Heinrich Schmidt (Saabrück.1740 – Darmstadt 1821) as frame label implies since purchased by 1st Marquess. A small town built on rocks on the left, coming down to the blue water's edge and a small beach with fishing boats. Green woods in background and more huge rocks in brownish colour. In distance - rugged mountainous country in misty grey. Fishing boats in foreground with fishermen and their nets. Pale blue sky fading to cream.
Provenance
Acquired by Frederick William Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol (1769-1859) in around 1830 and by descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate as by 'Schmidt' [a third, in Bristol collection until 1993 was most recently with Whitfield Fine Art until sold at Christie's in New York, 8 June 2011, lot 92 as by Pierre-Athanase Chauvin (1774-1832)]; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
