Summary
A kingwood, amaranth and bois satine parquetry inlaid ormolu mounted petit commode, by Pierre-Harry Mewesen, Paris circa 1775. The rectangular top with a pierced cast gallery and geometric cube inlaid panel above three drawers and raised on cabriole legs. The whole with conforming inlay. Stamped 'P.H.'
Full description
Pierre-Harry Mewesen, maître in 1766. Of Scandinavian origin, Mewesen worked in Paris, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine until the Revolution, focusing predominantly on Transition and Louis XVI pieces. Mewesen is well-known for his geometric and cube marquetry. See Collection of Baron Hottinguer, Christie's, Paris, 2-3 December 2003, lot 73. Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. The house and contents were acquired through the National Land Fund and transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
