Summary
A floral marquetry inlaid kingwood,amaranth and ormolu mounted bureau de dame by Pierre Roussel (1723-1782) Paris, circa 1750 Of bombe form with a fall enclosing a fitted interior with a shelf and three drawers and a leather inset writing surface. The whole inlaid with floral designs and floral cast gilt metal mounts. Raised on cabriole legs with further applied mounts and sabot. Bearing a stamp to the frame: 'P. Roussel ME'
Full description
This commode is stamped ‘P. Roussel ME’, a Parisian cabinet maker and dealer. Three small commodes stamped P.Roussel with comparable marquetry of floral bouquets on a tulipwood ground, their mounts following a similar arrangement are illustrated by F.Quéré in his monography of this dynasty of French ébénistes (p.97-98). Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. The house and contents were acquired through the National Land Fund and transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
