Summary

Graphite on paper, View of the Lake Avernus from the Road to Cumae by Louis-François Cassas (Azay-le-Ferron 1756 – Versailles 1827), 1780. 77. Vue générale du lac d'Averne, prise du chemin de Cumae, au dessus du lac, on voit une partie de Monte Nuovo, la grotte de la Sybille, le lac [Fuerin]. Mounted together with ICK/D/76 on same mount. Lake Avernus is a sunken volcanic crater and the Romans believed it to be the entrance to the Underworld. Inscribed 45 top right. Encircled 119 and 27 on reverse.

Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund
