Summary
General Remarks: Flintlock sporting gun, c. 1785, by Harrison & Thompson, London (active 1779-1803). Penelope Harrison and James Thompson, the widow and son-in-law of John Harrison were gunmakers of 18 Swan Street, Minories, London, and contractors to the Ordnance and East India Company. Barrel: Iron barrel, formed in 2 stages, octagonal to round. The top breech flat engraved Thompson – London. The muzzle with a bead sight. Engraved barrel tang. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel slides. Ramrod missing. Length 89.5cm Calibre 19mm. Stock: Walnut full stock of handrail form with a chequered wrist. Steel furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with acorn finial and 3 ramrod pipes. Silver escutcheon to left side of stock engraved EH. Lock: Flintlock, the plate of flat form with bevelled edges and a stepped tail. Engraved Harrison & Thompson. Bolt safety catch behind cock. Anti-friction roller to frizzen. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails.
