Summary
Late 18th-century English needlework sampler on buff canvas worked with Solomon's Temple and many traditional sampler motifs. Embroidered in polychrome wool and silk through to wool or linen plain weave ground fabric. The ground fabric has a fairly open weave structure and the embroidery is predominately cross-stitch and some chain stitch. The centre of the sampler depicts Solomon’s Temple with Adam and Eve and the apple tree below. There is a religious text above the temple and the rest of the sampler is filled with sampler motifs of ships, animals, birds, flowers, vases and a house and has a floral border. The sampler is appears to be backed with brown paper or card. The sampler is framed and glazed with a narrow frame sealed with paper over a wooden backboard.
