Summary
8 day mahogany table clock by Robert Wood, London. c.1790 2 train, 5 pillar fusee movement with verge escapement and rack hour striking on a bell. Engraved back plate with attributes to music and scrolling leafy decoration and borders. Brass, break arch dial with Strike/Silent dial in arch and scrolling rococo spandrels. Silvered brass chapter ring with roman numerals and Arabic five minute figures. Engraved and silvered brass dial centre, signed: “Robert Wood, London” above centre and with a calendar dial below. Pierced, blued steel serpentine hands. Mahogany veneered, break arch case with mahogany carcass. Brass lined pads and brass carrying handle, to top, brass lining to front edges and front door, pierced mahogany frets, lined with green silk, to sides and brass bracket feet to stepped base. Note: A Robert Wood is recorded as apprenticed in 1789, and there are various references to a maker of that name working in London during the 1790s and early 1800s, including addresses at Southwark/Borough 1795-1811 and the Kent Road in 1820.
