Summary
Carved wooden statue of Saint Mary Magdalene, Flemish seventeenth or eighteenth century. She wears a long flowing dress, her hair falls down her back in long tresses. Her right hand held to her breast, in her left she holds a circular vessel serving as a candle-holder. A skull by her right foot. Repairs to left arm. The candleholder is a later addition. The Mary Magdalene and the companion figure of St Mark (NT 825173) were installed at the foot of the staircase in 1890-91 during renovations undertaken by Walford and Spokes for Mr Colyer Fergusson; the Walford and Spokes workbook records the ‘Supplying and fixing at foot of stairs two Antique Carved figures.’
Provenance
Supplied by Walford and Spokes in 1890-91 as part of works undertaken by Thomas Colyer-Fergusson. Bequeathed to the National Trust with Ightham Mote in 1985 by Charles Henry Robinson (1892 -1985).
