Summary
Oil painting on plaster laid down on primed canvas, Vide inaccessible by René Guiette (Antwerp 1893- Antwerp 1976), signed and dated, bottom right, below plaster, in pencil: 4 XI 59 René Guiette. Written on back of stretcher: 1959 Vide Inaccesible. Closely woven canvas, painted white with central plaster panel, paint applied roughly and gouged with various numbers and symbols. Guiette was a Belgian artist associated with 'Matter painting' of the mid-20th century in Europe. His work, however, is more contemplative and abstract than other Matter painters and is intended as meditations on the nature of painting and its materials.
