Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Armada off the South East Coast of England by Roland Pym (b. Cambridgeshire 1920), 1951. The cartographical scene shows the English fireships advancing towards the Spanish fleet in three stages. The action took place off the Isle of Wight on the 25th July, the English fireships off Calais on the night of 28th July, and the final battle of Graveslines on the 29th July. On the left is Queen Elizabeth on a shell throne holding a portrait of Drake.
Provenance
Object transferred to National Trust ownership in 2009, previously on loan to Buckland Abbey from Plymouth Museum since 1989.
