A cuboid white marble Roman Mithraic funerary altar, with detachable pediment (voluted) inscribed - mounted on a square-section stone column with a tiered base. 2nd century A.D.
Provenance
Belonged to Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson. Came into possession of the National Trust in 1967.

'D.M.APAULO ET CON BM MITHRES ET HERMES' translated:'To the heavenly gods, Hermes dedicated this in blessed memory of Papalyo and his wife - devoted to Mithras the light-given' (translator unknown)
