Summary
A glazed Persian tile. A rectangular tile made of fritware, relief moulded with an equestrian man on a stationary stallion. The horse is fitted with bridle, stirrup and girth strappings and a fringed saddle cloth. The tile is underglaze painted in turquoise, green, red and brown, with black details against a cobalt blue ground scattered with naturalistic plants and flowers. The figure wears a turquoise robe with a belt and high boots and on his head a turban. There appears to be an object which is missing between the man’s hands (an umbrella perhaps) which has created a strange appearance of the man either holding a mobile phone or playing an air guitar! Unframed. Persian , Qajar period.
Provenance
Acquired by the National Trust in 1986 with the aid of bequests from E.L. Elliot, H. Ridler, D.E. Swiffen and Alice M. Weeks, grant-aid from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Countryside Commission and funds raised by the East Anglian Coast & Countryside Appeal, and an endowment from Mildred Cordeaux, a cousin of Thomas Upcher
