Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Mother with her Child, circle of Alfred Edward Chalon, RA (Geneva 1780 – Kensington 1860), circa 1830. A three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, seated on the left, gazing at the spectator, her brown hair dressed on top with tight ringlets, wearing a yellow dress with a yellow waistband with a large buckle and a red shawl draped over her right shoulder and spread across her lap, her left hand outstretched to support a young child seated on the edge of a green covered Empire sofa wearing a white dress and holding a doll wearing a red dress and a straw bonnet. The background on the right is covered with a green drape with gold fringe and from which hang gold tassels, and there is a distant view on the left with a far horizon and sky.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of inheritance tax and transferred to the National Trust under the terms of the will of Mrs Christopher Hussey (1907-2006)
