Summary
Oil painting on panel, Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine of Alexandria, attributed to Luca Longhi (Ravenna 1507 – Ravenna 1580), mid-16th century. The Madonna, seated turned to the right, offers her left breast to the Christ Child on her lap and held by her left hand, but who turns his head aside to look at St Catherine, who kneels on the left, with her left hand to her heart, and her right supported on her broken wheel, holding a palm frond. The Virgin is dressed in pink (once red?) with a green strap and a blue mantle, St Catherine in yellow with a green surcoat, and the Christ Child is naked. A landscape is seen through an opening on the left.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of inheritance tax and transferred to the National Trust under the terms of the will of Mrs Christopher Hussey (1907-2006)
