Many dining chairs were made around 1750 in designs by Thomas Chippendale, but few have seats of Dutch stamped leather like those at Rufford. The embossed and richly coloured floral pattern in the leather seat has a central vase motif which takes its cue from the carved vase shape in the chair back.
Summary
One of a set of six red walnut Chippendale-style dining chairs, c.1750; the back with cupid-bow top rail and carved and pierced vase splat; cabriole front legs with carved knees and hoof feet; drop-in seat covered in 18th-century embossed calfskin, probably Dutch, with a floral vase design in varnished silver leaf and blue, green, red and white oils.
Provenance
