Full description
One of a pair of silver mounted flintlock pistols, c1730, by Joseph Lamotte (1716-1784), Leyne, France. Round iron barrel, the breech with a flattened top and flattened sides. The muzzle formed with a silver ring and having a silver blade fore-sight. The breech decorated with gold damascene “stand of arms” motif (worn). Retained to the stock by 2 barrel pins. Wooden ramrod with horn tip. Barrel length 23.5cm. Calibre 16mm. Carved walnut full-stock with a deeply curving grip, the pommel cap formed as a “birds-head”. Silver furniture with a makers mark, comprising; buttcap in the form of a birds head, pierced side-plate of serpent form, pierced crowned escutcheon engraved with the initials T.J.S. surmounted by lions, trigger guard with decorative finial and long rear tang, and 2 baluster turned ramrod pipes. Flintlock, the lockplate of flat form with a bevelled edge. The cock and tail of lockplate engraved, the lockplate signed beneath the pan, JOSEPH LAMOTTE, LEYNE. Top of the cock missing from 140a. Cock replaced from 140b. Faceted frizzen and flash-pan. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 39cm
