Full description
One of a pair of flintlock pistols, c1710, made in Liege, probably for Samuel Vaughton (1698-1720) gunmaker, Birmingham. Round iron barrel with engraved breech and barrel tang. The breech with an unidentified proof mark. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel pins. Wooden ramrod with brass tip. Barrel length 30.5cm. Calibre 15mm. Carved walnut full-stock with bulbous pommel. Part of fore-stock replaced. Engraved brass furniture comprising; buttcap with long spurs, the pommel with grotesque mask, side-plate, trigger guard, escutcheon and 2 baluster turned ramrod pipes. Scroll form iron trigger. Flintlock of flat form with curving lockplate, scroll engraved and signed S. VAUGHTON. Faceted and square top frizzen. Faceted flash-pan; the frizzen spring with a spear shaped finial. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 48cm
