Full description
Wheellock rifled hunting carbine, German, c1700. Octagonal iron barrel, slightly swamped at the muzzle, and rifled with 7 grooves. Engraved with a zig-zag line at the breech. Brass blade foresight. The breech with a raised 2-leaf adjustable sight. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel pins. Ramrod missing. Barrel length 41.2cm. Calibre 12mm. Carved walnut full-stock, inlaid with decorative stained wood and bone, the butt inlaid with a mother-of-pearl crowned foliate cartouche. Brass trigger guard with scroll finials and a shaped finger rest. Horn butt-plate with conical-shaped steel resting foot, horn fore-end cap and 2 horn ramrod pipes (Front pipe missing). The butt with a sliding patch-box cover decorated with fluted horn. Iron trigger plate with double set iron triggers. Wheellock, the lockplate of flat form with an integral wheel cover, pierced at its lower edge. The plate stamped with the makers mark MS. Engraved bridle to the dog-spring; the flash-pan with a curved flashguard. The dog engraved with a dragons head and formed with a long arm with decorative knob. Sliding pan cover. Scrol finial to the dog-spring. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 64.5cm
