Summary
A 'Set of Toys' c.1790, an educational game by Lady Eleanor Fenn (1743-1813), published by John Marshall & Co. Comprising The Grammar Box, The Spelling Box and The Figure Box. The three boxes all contained within a deal box with a sliding top. With printed sheet detailing John Marshall's publications for the 'Instruction and Entertainment of Young Minds'; includes entry for A Set of Toys for enabling Ladies to instill the Rudiments of Spelling, Reading, Grammar and Arithmetic, under the Idea of Amusement. The Scheme is contained in one Large Box including 3 small boxes or Trays - each Tray being divided into 10 or 12 Compartments: Spelling Grammar and Figure Boxes in one £1-1-0; Spelling Box only £0-10-6; Grammar & Figure Boxes in one - £0-16-0. Contents of the Spelling Box: Alphabet of Roman small letters, Alphabet of Roman capitals, Alphabet of Italic small letters/Black small letters, Alphabet of Italic capitals/Black capitals, Alphabets for composing words, Spelling Tables, Reading Tables, 2 cubes or dice with letters on faces (An Alphabet to be pasted on cubes - one for vowels aeiouy, 3 others for consonants bcdfgh, jklmnp, rstvwx. Missing: Child's Own Box, Reading Screen Plus extra cards - 15 cards of different scenes, and 1 card of a pig which doesn't fit any other set. Contents of the Grammar Box: Sets of cards: Prepositions, Conjunctions, Nouns with a cut on back of each, Adverbs, Participles, Interjections, Termincations, Helping Verbs, Verbs, Pronouns, Articles and Adjectives. Twelve cards of grammar lessons. Contents of the Figure Box: Sets of cards: Cuts of Beasts, cuts of Birds, cuts of various Objects, large cuts of various Objects 4 cubes or dice with Figures (numbers), packets of Figures. Tables numbered 1-6, Tables numbered I-VI, Numeration Slips (1 missing), Addition Slips, Three Sums Missing: Purse with counters, Sack with Beans for Merchandise, Case for Studying Tables, Equal Numbers, A Cafe in which to put the Studying Table, 8 Ciphers. Plus a set of cards with Multiplication Tables, published by J. Aldis, ... Pavement, Moorfields, London, comprising pairs of cards with cuts of animals which when matched together produce the multiplication tables from 3x to 12x (several of the lower numbers are missing)
