Summary
A pair of painted ash and upholstered window seats, English circa 1790 With shaped arm rests, the frame later painted light blue, raised on six square section tapered legs, the front three with spade feet. The serpentine front rail with over stuffed seat, upholstered in pale grey-green patterned damask. These window seats are very likely to be original to the Drawing Room. The window recesses are both tapered and differ in size. These window seats have been especially made to fit the taper and the different dimensions. The 1834 inventory for Bank House lists the Drawing Room with '8 stuff Chairs covered with damask, 2 Elbow ditto, One Sofa, Two Window Stools en suit'. The picture of Elizabeth Josephine Penrose (nee Peckover) by James Doyle Penrose, dated 1894, shows her sitting on this pattern of window seat. The Country Life article of 1947 on Bank House illustrates the window seats in position in the recesses. The sale catalogue of 1948 lists in the Drawing Room, Lot 275 'two upholstered window seats' which were withdrawn before the sale. Reproduction Number: Film 2, Neg.9
