Caption
Wine cisterns were filled with ice and used to hold and cool bottles of wine. They were often highly decorated like this silver one.
Summary
An oval wine cistern elaborately chased with floral, anthemion and wheatsheaf motifs, the rim heavily decorated with spherical and foliate scroll motifs, with two lion mask drop ring handles, on four supports in the form of lions holding shields and standing on domed bun shaped feet.
