Painting, Sir Isaac Newton PRS (1642–1727). An oval grisaille relief of Sir Isaac Newton. Stucco frame and plaster decoration is CMS 773770.
Full description
This grisaille trompe-l'oeil painting is based on a relief portrait of Sir Isaac Newton by the Flemish sculptor Laurent Delvaux (1696-1778), who worked in England between 1717 and 1728. His reliefs of Newton, of which a terracotta model and four versions in marble survive, seem likely to have been made after the sculptor had returned to Flanders from Rome in 1733.
