Cover to a massive jar, porcelain, domed with seated Buddhistic lion finial (plaster replacements), one of a pair, the recessed panels painted in famille rose enamels with antique vessels alternating with peony flowers, China, Jingdezhen, decorated in Guangzhou (Canton), circa 1735-40.
Full description
A pair of jars matching this description were included in the 1842 auction of the contents of Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire, on August 1st, lots 34 and 35. Many of the Chinese heirlooms were acquired by Admiral Anson in the 1740s and 1750s.
