Summary
A carved chimneypiece of white marble with Sicillian Jasper inlay. Narrow mantel with sweeping curves. Centre stone of a sunburst head, flanked by frieze panels of quatrefoil insets. Frieze stops of inset urns. Fire opening with sweeping curved stones, Sicilian Jasper veneer panels to the pilaster stones, frieze stops and frieze quatrefoils and hearthstone. Hearthstone in several pieces with three panels. Attributed to Sir Henry Cheere.
Provenance
Purchased from C. J. Pratt by Maud and Gilbert Russell for the Red Bedroom, Mottisfont Abbey in June 1935. Transferred to the National Trust in 1957 from Mrs Russell under the Memorandum of Wishes.
