Full description
Oil painting on canvas, Houses by Michael Andrews (Norwich 1928 – 1995), 1974-1976. Andrews was a painter who valued observation and systematic drawing, whatever his subject matter. He joined the London Group in 1962, when he became known for painting large party scenes that epitomised the ‘swinging Sixties’, incorporating images from the media, fashion, pop music and cinema. This work is far more quiet, and much more to the taste of Derek Hill. It is a prosaic view of grey houses, drawn with deliberately skewed perspective. This visual disruption makes us study these suburban semis all the more. The TV aerial stands silhouetted against the sky, its delicate fingers reaching out into the emptiness.
