Caption
Bauchant was an artist who worked in a naïve style: one of the so-called ‘modern primitives’. His love of nature was inspired by his work as a gardener until 1914 when he was called up to serve in Moudros and Salonika. On his return to France, he discovered his artistic skill, and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne for the first time in 1921. He was encouraged by Le Corbusier, and was commissioned by Diaghilev to design the costumes and sets for the ballet ‘Apollon Musagète’. This picture is typical of his earlier works, which were later succeeded by subjects from history and mythology.
