Caption
The Boulevard des Batignolles is in the 17th arrondissement in Paris. During the 19th century, Batignolles had an active cultural life, serving as a base for artists who became known as the ‘groupe des Batignolles.’ Bonnard is famous for his depictions of Parisian life. The subdued tonality of this work is not typical of his work, which tended to be composed of bright colours. He worked at first in a highly patterned style, which evolved around 1900, when he used space more freely and used rounder forms, as seen in this painting.
