Summary
Three Brussels tapestry panels depicting the Earl of Orkney's campaign and bearing his arms and the Order of the Thistle.
Provenance
Based on a series known as the "Arts of War", originally made in 1690s for Elector Maximilliam of Bavaria and Prince Louis of Baden. The Duke of Marlborough commissioned adaptation of series, each scene supposedly representing episode in war of Spanish Succession. Third series made for his generals and were at Stowe, Stanmer, and Cliveden. The Cliveden set dispersed 1795; three bought by 1st Lord Astor, 5 others Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.
