Summary
Sculpture, marble, Commandante del Mar - Venetian Admiral of the Fleet by Bonazza. Square base and plinth. Supposed to represent Marco Polo, a bearded man standing with slight curve to body, his heavy cloak parted by his hands, the left one resting on a globe supported by lion's head. Figure wears tall curved hat.
Provenance
Originally located in the atrium of the Palazzo Morosini, William Waldorf Astor purchased Nautica from the Gatterburg-Morosini sale in Venice in 1894. Presented to the National Trust, with the house and grounds, by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952) in 1942.
