Summary
Bronzed terracotta figure of Ganesha. Attributed to John Lockwood Kipling (1837–1911). Late 19th century. The figure on the shelf depicts Ganesha, a Hindu deity known as the remover of obstacles and God of new beginnings. In Hindu tradition, he is often invoked at the start of important undertakings to bring good luck. It was perhaps for this reason that Kipling chose the elephant as his logo.
