Photograph, facsimile, Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) in her boudoir at Naulakaha, the Kiplings' home in Vermont. The showcase caption reads - "Caroline (Mrs Kipling) in her boudoir the only room through which it was possible to reach Kipling's study". Caroline Starr Balestier was born in 1862. She married Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) the author and poet, son of John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) and Alice Macdonald, in 1892. She died in 1939. They had three children: (i) Josephine Kipling (1892-1899) (ii) Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976) (iii) John Kipling (1897- killed in action 1915)
