Summary
A scarlet-japanned bureau bookcase, English, circa 1920, in early 18th century style. With moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors, the glazing framed with re-entrant corners and with two slender horizontal glazing bars, and enclosing a green-painted interior. The bureau base with hinged fall enclosing an interior japanned in yellow and fitted with an arrangement of four pigeonholes and five short drawers around a central small cupboard door and a pair of bookslides. With two long drawers below. Raised on four cabriole legs with pad feet. Shaped aprons. Decorated all over with scarlet japanning of Chinese figures, buildings and fences.
Provenance
Listed in the Parlour in the inventory taken at Bateman's in 1939. Bequeathed by Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) with Bateman’s and its contents.
