Summary
An upholstered sofa, English, circa 1920. Of 'Knole'-type, but with fixed ends. With rectangular back, fixed ends and loose seat cushion covered in green velvet (replaced in 1981 with curtain fabric) paned with flat braid, and with two loose cushions. The oak frame largely concealed by the upholstery. Raised on three baluster-, ring- and block-turned front supports, the outer pair serving as supports for the straight, upholstered arms, on turned feet. The rear supports rectangular-section. All joined by moulded stretchers.
Provenance
Listed (with cushions) in the Parlour in the inventory taken at Bateman's in 1939. Bequeathed by Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) with Bateman’s and its contents.Re-covered using curtains from East Windows in December 1981. The cost of re-covering a gift of the Beckenham and Bromley National Trust Centre.
