Summary
An oak mural spice cupboard, English, circa 1900, in late 17th century style. Possibly made from a late 17th century longcase clock hood. The top board with moulded edge, above a hinged door fitted with a panel inlaid in fruitwood with the initials 'EL' within a lozenge, within mouldings, and with integral ebonised bobbin-turned pilasters, and with brass escutcheon and iron hinges. The interior fitted with eight short drawers - three, two, two, one - all with applied edge mouldings and brass drop handles and backplates.
Provenance
Listed in the Large Hall in the inventory taken at Bateman's in 1939. Bequeathed by Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) with Bateman’s and its contents.
