Summary
Pastel on paper, Josephine Kipling (1892-1899) as a Child, With the initials EH to the top left-hand corner, of a small girl reading, in a gilt gesso and oak frame. Inscribed in a paper note on the reverse "Josephine, daughter of Rudyard Kipling, Esq. painted by E. Holbrook, 108 E 23rd St. New York City". The painting is believed to have been created in late 1894. ‘…Frederick (‘Fred’) Holbrook II was a grandson of Frederick Holbrook, a prominent Brattleboro permanent resident, Governor of Vermont during part of the Civil War and a friend of Kipling. Fred’s cousin Emmerline was an artist and stayed at Naulakha in late 1894 where she painted the portrait of Josephine…’ The original source for this is: Pinney.
