John Lockwood Kipling designed at least two military medals. This medal was designed for the Bengal Presidency Rifle Association and was struck in silver in 1886 by John Pinches Ltd. of London . In 1888 he designed an Army ‘Best Shot’ medal, showing a Sikh, a Purbian and a Gurkha soldier. It does not appear to have been struck, but it was translated into a terracotta relief in around 1895 (see NT 761580), also at Bateman's.
