Chedworth Roman Villa, Gloucestershire
NT 74016
Summary
Cist Burial containing human remains. The remains are of an infant aged approximately 2 months old. The burial also included 5 tesserae, 5 oyster shells and animal bones (possibly pig and rodent) - RohnBogner, A. 2022. 'The Infant Burials' in Chedworth Roman Villa Monograph, 422-425. Discovered in January 1935 behind the south-west wing near Room 1 (see Chedworth Roman Villa Archaeological Investigations 1994 – 2008, Phil Bethell), immediately outside the east wall of the latrine. The stone cover was in-situ. A note on the stone slab of the cist appeared in the Journal of Roman Studies, vol. XXV, 1935, 217 written by St. Clair Baddeley, though his facts are thought to be innaccurate. It is unclear if the animal bones are as a result of direct burial with the infant or later contamination.
Provenance
Discovered in 1935 during an excavation of the South Wing by St. Clair Baddeley.
