Summary
Marble, King Alfred (‘The Great’) (Wantage 846/9 – 899) by John Michael Rysbrack (Antwerp 1694 – London 1770), signed by Michael Rysbrack, 1764. A portrait bust, head placed centrally wearing a plain crown and cloak with fur collar. The bust cut trapezoid-ally; on scrolled socle incised 'Alfred The Great'.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
