Summary
Stand for a gilt metal dish, Sefferin Alken (1717- London 1782), late 18th century. White and parcel gilt, supported by fabulous mer-beasts (a woman and a lion, both winged with animal feet) above an oval patera with Medusa head and Vitruvian wave base.
Provenance
Supplied to Sir Richard Colt Hoare. Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
