Church begun 1730 and finished 1734 by Henry Flitcroft Esq. Architect. The church is on the site of a leper hospital dedicated, in 1101 by Matilda the wife of Henry I, to St Giles the patron saint of outcasts. At her behest a 'Cup of Charity' was given to condemned prisoners as they passed the door of the hospital chapel on their way to execution at Tyburn.
