Summary
Whole plate glass negative, one of a set of 25, called the Bristol High Cross or the Stone Cross, after Francis Nicholson (Pickering 1753 – London 1844), circa 1913. The original watercolour, now in the British Museum (1944,1014.139), is from an album described in the posthumous catalogue of Sir Richard Colt Hoare’s library as: ‘Rural Scenery of Stourhead, consisting of 33 Magnificent Drawings, by P. [sic] Nicholson. Atlas size, bound in whole Russia. A most Splendid Volume.’ The album was sold at Sotheby’s, 16 July 1913, Lot 242, purchased by Walter Vernon Daniell, when these photographs were probably taken. The title, taken from a label attached to the mount of the original watercolour, is incorrect; this is St Peter's Pump.
Provenance
Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
